Happy October – my all-time favorite month of the year! Fall may have started in September, but it's October that not only brings us the real crispness of fall weather, but also brings my most beloved holiday: Halloween!
Halloween’s mystique enchanted me early in life – the eerie atmosphere, the mischief and mayhem – all of it. But most of all, Halloween was one of the few holidays that my siblings and I were able to spend together.
I have a very blended family, and holidays and summer vacations always seemed to split the five of us siblings up when we were younger. My oldest brothers and I would often spend certain holidays with our mom in Indiana or summers with our grandparents in Illinois, while our other brother usually had the same sort of schedule visiting his dad. Christmas, Thanksgiving, and summer vacations were always missing someone or split between households.
Halloween however, was a holiday no one seemed to care greatly about, so we were all usually together! At least for the earlier years when the older siblings weren’t too cool for trick-or-treating ;)
So my love for Halloween started young, and only grew larger every year. Which is exactly why I’ve decided to create a special Halloween DIY series over the next few weeks! This will be a “5 Things” series spread out over multiple posts – re-vamping and “Halloween-ifying” past DIY projects from the blog. So let’s get started!
These Peanut Butter Pretzel Mummies are my Halloween spin on this project, and I think they turned out even better this time around!
Bright White Wilton’s Candy Melts
Edible googly eyes
First, spread some parchment paper over a cutting board or baking sheet, and create your peanut-butter pretzel sandwiches.
Once all your sandwiches are made, melt your Wilton’s Candy Melts. You can use a double-boiler, or you can be lazy (like yours truly) and just melt them in the microwave. I did 30-second intervals, stirring in-between each one, and it took about two minutes altogether.
Dunk each pretzel sandwich, on a spoon, into the melted candy. Carefully shake any excess off of the spoon by wiggling it side to side, and then place the coated pretzel sandwich onto your parchment paper baking sheet.
While the candy melts are still wet, add two edible googly eyes to each pretzel sandwich.
Set your coated sandwiches in the fridge for 15-20 minutes – just enough time to set the candy so that it hardens over the pretzel sandwich.
Once the candy has set, remove the sandwiches from the fridge – it’s time to make the mummies! Re-heat your bowl of candy melts, to soften it up, and then drizzle strands of the melted candy over the sandwiches with a spoon. This is trial and error so take your time, and expect it to be a little messy.
And that’s it! Place them in the fridge once more to set the last layer of candy melt drizzle, and they’ll be good to go!
Hope you enjoy these delicious mummies! Any other Halloween fanatics out there?! Because if there are, check out our other fall treats: Pumpkin Spice Waffle Ice Cream Sandwiches and Fall-inspired Candy Popcorn Balls!
